Plant native to the temperate cones of northern Europe, Asia and North America. The part used is generally the flowers, leaves and berries. The plant is collected wild and left to dry at room temperature. The active compounds are flavonoids, glycosides (vitexin, vitexin-2-rhamnosides, rutin, quercetin), oligomeric proanthocyanidins (catechins and epicatechins), among the most significant. Hawthorn is well known for its use in cardiovascular disorders.
One of the basic indications of this plant is its application in case of angina pectoris and coronary artery disease, as well as preventive treatment in patients who have already suffered a myocardial infarction. It is indicated in cardiac arrhythmias as well as in the treatment of mild forms of heart failure with dyspnea on exertion and edema in the ankles. It is used and its use is well documented in hypertension, atherosclerosis and hyperlipidemia. The active ingredients present in hawthorn improve blood flow in the myocardium.
Its use as a cardiotonic and cardioprotective for senile heart, with mild symptoms, including early angina, myocardial weakness after illness, circulatory support, atherosclerosis, hypertension, peripheral artery disorders, is well documented. It is a sedative of the sympathetic nervous system and has an antispasmodic effect, which causes coronary vasodilation that improves myocardial regeneration. It is indicated as a light sedative. A decoction of Hawthorn reduces cholesterol levels in humans. In another study, hawthorn decreased low-density lipoprotein levels, weight, and body fat in animals.
